WARNING
Information on installation, adjustment and replacement of products that cannot be found in the user manual will be provided to you at the place of purchase or from the distributor. The dealer's manual for professional and experienced bicycle mechanics can be found on our website (https://si.shimano.com).
For safety, please read this "User's Manual" carefully before use, follow it for proper use, and keep it for future reference.
The following instructions must always be followed to prevent personal injury and physical damage to the equipment and surroundings. The instructions are classified according to the degree of danger or damage that may occur if the product is used incorrectly.
DANGER - Failure to follow the instructions will result in death or serious injury.
WARNING - Failure to follow the instructions could result in death or serious injury.
CAUTION - Failure to follow the instructions could result in personal injury or physical damage to the equipment and surroundings.
WARNING
- To ensure the safety of children using this product, children should be instructed on proper use after both guardians and children have fully understood the following information. Failure to follow the instructions may result in serious injury.
- Do not disassemble or modify the product. This may cause the product to malfunction, you may fall unexpectedly and be seriously injured.
- Before attempting to ride with these pedals and cleats (shoes), make sure you understand the operation of the locking/releasing mechanism of the pedals and cleats (shoes). SPD pedals are designed to release only when necessary. They are not designed to release automatically when you fall off the bicycle.
- Use only SPD-compatible shoes with this product. Other types of shoes may not release from the pedals or may release unexpectedly.
- Use only SHIMANO cleats (SM-SH51 / SM-SH56) and securely tighten the mounting bolts to the shoes. Failure to tighten the screws securely may result in a fall that will prevent the cleats from releasing.
- Before attempting to ride with these pedals and cleats, apply the brakes, then place one foot on the ground and practice engaging and releasing each cleat from the pedal until you can do it automatically and with minimal effort.
- Ride on a flat surface first until you have learned how to engage and release the cleats from the pedals.
- Before riding, adjust the holding force of the cleats on the pedals to your needs. If the holding force of the cleats on the pedals is weak, the cleats may accidentally release, you may lose balance, and you may fall off the bicycle. If the holding force of the cleat on the pedals is high, the cleats may not be easy to release.
- When riding at low speed or when there is a possibility that you will have to stop (e.g. when making a full turn, at an intersection, when riding uphill or taking a sharp turn), release the cleats from the pedals beforehand so that you can quickly put your feet on the ground if necessary.
- When riding in adverse conditions, use a lower cleat holding force to attach the pedal cleats.
- To ensure proper attachment and release, keep the cleats and bindings free of dirt and debris.
- Remember to check the cleats for wear regularly. When the cleats are worn, replace them and adjust the cleat holding force before and after riding.
- If you do not heed the above warnings, your shoes may not come off the pedals when you want them to, or they may come off unexpectedly or accidentally, resulting in serious injury.
- If you ride on the road, be sure to install reflectors on your bicycle. Reflectors are sold separately for models that do not come with reflectors as standard. For information on compatible reflectors, contact your place of purchase or distributor.
- If the reflectors are dirty or damaged, do not continue riding your bicycle. Otherwise, it will be difficult for oncoming vehicles to see you.
Models with cleat adjustment pins:
- If you are unsure how to adjust the cleats on the pedals, contact your place of purchase or distributor.
- Lift your feet off the pedals and slide them to the side to release them from the pedals. Place one foot firmly on the ground and practice placing and removing the other foot from the pedal until you become accustomed to the entire operation. Otherwise, you may fall and be seriously injured. If you cannot get used to this operation, use the product with the spacers installed.
- Wear clothing and protective equipment that are appropriate for the way you use the bicycle. Because the prongs are very long, they can cause serious injury if they come into contact with the skin.
